Gawker Media once again finds itself at the center of an investigation regarding Apple: The FBI has contacted Gawker after the blog broke the story about an iPad security breach that allowed computer experts to uncover the email addresses of 114,000 people who had purchased the 3G device. The FBI, which says it is in the “very early” stages of an investigation, presented Gawker with a formal preservation notice. The group that actually exposed the flaw, which, in a lewd joke, goes by Goatse Security, insists it did nothing illegal and that “iPad 3G users had the right to know that their email addresses were potentially public knowledge so they could take steps to mitigate the issue (like changing their email address). This was done in service of the American public.”
