With a penalty kick six minutes from the end of the game, Ghana sneaked by Serbia, 1-0, to become the first African nation to win at the 2010 World Cup. Serbia went down to 10 men in the 74th minute when Aleksandar Lukovic was sent off for a second yellow card and his team never recovered. Ten minutes later, a handball in the area earned a penalty kick for Ghana, which was converted by Asamoah Gyan. In Sunday’s earlier game, however, Algeria was not so fortunate. A goalkeeping gaffe in the 79th minute gifted Slovenia a 1-0 victory, meaning the European side goes to the top of the United States’ group. Slovenia and the U.S. will face off on Friday in what could make or break the Americans’ chances of progressing to the next round.
