Poles are heading to the voting booths Sunday to pick a new president, two months after the last one, President Lech Kaczynski, was killed in a tragic plane crash. At stake is Poland’s mission in Afghanistan as well as its position on several issues in the European Union. Frontrunner Bronislaw Komorowski is a moderate, favors adopting the Euro, and ending his country’s participation in the Afghanistan war. Trailing him is the late president’s identical twin, Jaroslaw Kaczynski. Kaczynski is a social conservative who wants to scale back market reforms and is opposed to adopting the Euro any time soon. An opinion poll published Friday showed that 42 percent of Poles want Komorowski elected, while 31 percent favor Kaczynski.
