Senate candidate Mark Kirk (R-IL) apologized Tuesday for misstating parts of his Navy record and promised to make sure it would never happen again. "I have made mistakes concerning certain aspects of my accomplishments and experiences, and I apologize for those mistakes and I pledge to correct those errors," Kirk said, adding that he’s not perfect. Kirk had said he was awarded “intelligence officer of the year,” but the award was really for his entire unit. He also claimed to have come under enemy fire while flying over Iraq—a claim disputed by other people on board. And he claimed to have commanded the Pentagon war room, a duty he actually shared. The Republican’s race against Alexi Giannoulias for President Obama’s old senate seat has tightened considerably in recent weeks.
