The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s office is investigating whether Oksana Grigorieva, Mel Gibson’s ex-girlfriend and the mother of his child, tried to extort money from him with the much-publicized tapes of him allegedly admitting that he abused her. An investigation into the domestic violence claims were already taking place, but now the sheriff’s office said they met with Gibson’s lawyers Tuesday about possible extortion. There has also been debate over whether or not the tapes are even admissible if a domestic violence case were filed against Gibson since Grigorieva taped him without his knowledge, and California law requires both parties to consent to taping a conversation. Some legal experts have said the act of taping itself could even be considered a crime. Gibson's lawyers have strongly denied his involvement in the tapes, in which he allegedly uses racial expletives and reportedly told Grigorieva she "deserved" to be hit.
