A suicide bomber’s blast killed six children and injured three in Kandahar province early Monday. The bomber was apparently trying to assassinate a government official, who was unharmed. Insurgents frequently target government leaders in the region, but often wound bystanders instead. The explosion happened in the morning as the children were on their way to school. A spokesman said all the children were under the age of 10. Currently, NATO troops are carrying out major operations to remove the Taliban from Kandahar, the movement’s birthplace.
