Wyclef Jean’s candidacy is for real. The former rapper, who left Haiti when he was 9, outlines his platform in an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal, explaining that, as a political outsider, “My only agenda is to help the country I love grow and prosper.” To do that, he believes there must be renewed focus on security in the earthquake-ravaged nation, job creation, education, and finally collecting the aid that was promised in January. “Foreign governments pledged $5.3 billion to Haiti after the earthquake,” he writes, “but only 9 percent of it has shown up. Haiti needs a president who can turn promises into reality.” But Jean has a long way to go to silence the doubters. Sean Penn is already among his most vocal critics. “What the Haitian people need now is a leader who is genuinely willing to sacrifice,'' Penn told CNN. "I haven't seen or heard anything of him in these last six months that I've been in Haiti.''
