On Friday, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new, French-made emergency contraceptive for the U.S. market. The prescription-only pill, called ella, is effective for up to five days after sex. By contrast, the most widely used emergency pill, Plan B, reduces the chance of pregnancy for up to three days after sex. While family-planning advocates have championed ella, antiabortion groups are already speaking out against it, arguing that it’s more of an abortion pill than a contraceptive.
