A popular Southern California car race ended in tragedy Saturday night, when an off-road truck veered off course and mowed down a crowd of excited spectators, killing eight people and injuring 12. The California 200 took place at the Soggy Dry Lake Bed in the Mojave Desert, about 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles. According to fire department supervisor Tim Franke, at least four of the injured were in serious condition when they were taken to nearby hospitals.
