Hundreds of Tea Party activists met in a desolate border region of Arizona on Sunday to cheer on conservative political candidates and bemoan what they believe to be relaxed immigration laws. The U.S. border, they say, is far too easy to cross. “Instead of finding bugs in our beds, we’re finding home invaders,” Tony Venuti, a Tucson radio host, told The New York Times. Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the controversial sheriff known for sweeping up illegals in immigrant-neighborhood raids, showed up, too. “If I had all the national TV here, I’d probably climb the fence to show you how easy it is,” Arpaio said. The rally was held on private property, near where a rancher was killed in March—a death that launched significant immigration debate in the state and across the country.
