Republicans have some new grist for election season: They are blasting President Obama for his remarks about a proposed Muslim center to be built two blocks from ground zero in New York. Obama first spoke about the controversy Friday, saying Muslims had the right to build their center there, but on Saturday he clarified his position, saying he would not discuss the “wisdom” of picking that location. Republicans have called the location choice insensitive; on Fox News, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said Washington and the White House are “disconnected” from the average American. Rep. Peter King (R-NY) accused the president of waffling. And Sarah Palin, of course, took to Twitter to attack the president’s comments. A huge majority—70 percent—of Americans oppose building the mosque so close to the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
