Well now we know where at least some of the oil went: Researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution say they discovered a 22-mile-long, 1.2-mile-wide oil plume 3,000 feet beneath the surface of the Gulf of Mexico in June, but they don't know where it went after Hurricane Alex. The researchers don’t know how toxic the plume is, so it’s unclear how it will affect Gulf wildlife. Meanwhile, Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen disputed two recent studies that contradicted a government report saying that about 75 percent of the oil has disappeared. “"You can take a lot of different estimates and run that formula, but that's the one we're starting with ... other than the 26 percent, the rest can be accounted for some way.”
