Apparently John McCluskey was not smarter than your average prison escapee. After a month on the lam, he was spotted by a forest ranger in Arizona and arrested, along with his alleged accomplice. McCluskey had been serving a 15-year sentence for second-degree murder when Casslyn Mae Welch helped spring him from jail, along with two other inmates who have since been returned to custody. McCluskey and Welch, suspected of murdering a couple earlier this month, apparently tried to go down with a fight, but the SWAT team was able to apprehend them before they could fire any shots. McCluskey has said that he would have killed several policemen if he had been able to reach his gun. "We were convinced that this would go down in a bloody shootout," said one law enforcement officer. Police had searched for the from the Southwest to western Montana.
