It’s bad enough that there’s been a massive salmonella outbreak in up to 17 states, sickening “about 1,000” people, according to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg. But now there’s proof that the work and safety conditions at these implicated farms were not up to snuff, either. “There’s no question these farms involved in the recall were not operating with the standards of practice we consider responsible,” Hamburg told CNN on Sunday. One of the implicated farms, Hillendale Farms—which announced a recall of 170 million eggs on Friday—said it was “devastated” by the possible connection between its eggs and salmonella. The other implicated farm, Wright County Egg, has recalled another 380 million.
