Here’s an incredible survival story: 33 Chilean miners, all of whom have been trapped 4.5 miles inside a cave for the past 17 days, wrote in a letter attached to a drill that they are still alive, according to President Sebastian Pinera. The piece of paper, tied to a drill that bore through the cave-in, where the miners are located, said: “The 33 of us in the shelter are well.” This is a promising announcement considering the government said the miners’ chances of survival were low earlier this month. The bad news, though, is that it could take up to 120 days to get the miners out. “It will take time,” Pinera said, “but it doesn't matter how long it takes, but to have a happy ending.” Rescuers plan to send food, hydration gels, and communication gear to the miners through narrow plastic tubes.
