Scientists at Illinois' Loyola University have discovered a protein that destroys HIV in Rhesus monkeys. The TRIM5a proteins in Rhesus monkeys gang up and destroy the virus; previously, the TRIM5a has been used to prevent HIV in Rhesus monkeys. However, humans have the TRIM5a protein and it does not protect them against HIV; in order to develop treatments that will allow it to do so, researchers will have to pinpoint the components that make it so effective in monkeys. Researchers are focusing on a particular chain of six amino acids, which could be altered to attack the virus.
