Hurricane Earl broke up as it hit New England, downgrading to tropical storm wind speeds of 70 mph as it moved to Cape Cod. Just a few hundred power outages and spots of flooding were reported in Massachusetts. Earl caused flooding in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but no injuries and little damage were reported. Other vacation spots hit on the unofficial last weekend of summer include Nantucket, which saw 30 mph winds, and Martha’s Vineyard, which got 3 inches of rain. Earl will reach Nova Scotia by early Saturday afternoon. Meteorologists didn’t expect Earl to slow down so quickly.
