American combat operations in Iraq may be over, but the violence is not. In broad daylight Sunday, suicide bombers and armed insurgents stormed an army base in Baghdad, claiming at least 12 lives and injuring 29 people. "There are bodies and body parts but we don't know if they belong to attackers or civilians," said an Iraqi security spokesman. Two weeks ago, more than 50 Iraqi soldiers were killed and 123 were wounded by another suicide bomber at the same base, which used to be a defense ministry headquarters under Saddam Hussein. For many Iraqis, the attack underscored the point that their army and police are not ready for the handover of security duties from coalition forces.
