Roughly 100 supporters of Park51, the proposed Islamic center about two blocks from ground zero, gathered near the site Friday night to light candles, sing songs, and pray on the eve of the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Organizers said the gathering was held a night before the anniversary so that Saturday could remain a day of mourning for those who lost their lives nine years ago. “This is the appropriate time to remember who we are and what we stand for,” Susan Lerner, the spokeswoman for Common Cause, one of the event’s organizers, told The Washington Post. Members of another activist group, Families for Peaceful Tomorrows—made up of about 250 survivors of those who died on 9/11—attended the vigil, too.
