Sixty journalists were honored by the International Press Institute during their World Press Freedom Heroes gala Tuesday. Several journalists famous for covering dangerous stories addressed the crowd, such as Turkish journalist Nedim Sener, who has been persecuted for his book on the murder of Hrant Dink; Iranian journalist Akbar Ganji, who has endured imprisonment and harassment for his defense of free speech; and Lebanese anchor May Chidiac, whose criticism of Syria’s influence over Lebanon resulted in an assassination attempt that left her badly injured. Dunja Mijatovic, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe representative on freedom of the media, told the audience, “These people, along with other press heroes, represent thousands of members of the media worldwide whose jobs put them in harm’s way in the cause of an open and democratic society. They deserve our admiration for their courage to tell the truth and make our societies freer even in the situations where their life is at stake.”
