On ABC's This Week with Christiane Amanpour, secretary of State Hillary Clinton defended America's sanctions against Iran, claiming that the Middle Eastern nation has chosen not to engage with the U.S. diplomatically when given the opportunity, and will have to suffer the consequences as a result. "I think the sanctions that have been endorsed and now are being implemented by the international community demonstrates our engagement," she said, "Because we've said to the Iranians all along, 'We have two tracks. We have the pressure track and we have the engagement, diplomatic track.' And we still remain open to that diplomacy." She also spoke to the effect the sanctions have had on Iran, classifying them as "biting," and stating that they had hurt Iran far deeper than its leaders are willing to admit. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on the other hand, said that the sanctions were not only "pathetic" but "worse than a used handkerchief."
