The FDA has put new restrictions on the diabetes drug Avandia after Europe pulled the drug from the market altogether. The European Medicines Agency said that the risk of heart attacks and strokes from the drug outweighed its benefits, while the FDA said there’s enough uncertainty about the drug’s side effects that it should only be used by diabetics without any other options. Avandia was once the world’s most popular diabetes drug. The drug’s maker, GlaxoSmithKline, will have to develop a “restricted access program” for Type 2 diabetes patients for whom other medications do not work.
