Two million people in northern Nigeria had to flee from their homes as authorities opened the Challawa and Tiga dams for the rainy season. Thousands of villages have been flooded, and it’s unclear whether Nigerian officials bothered to alert residents before opening the floodgates. The dams are opened each year, and usually the water flows into fields to irrigate crops. Earlier, Nigeria predicted low rainfall in the area this year, which could result in food shortages for 12 million people there.
