Add this to the list of trends favoring the GOP this year: Recent polls suggest that male voters are particularly enthusiastic this year, brought into the fold by a range of issues that traditionally draw men into the political sphere—and they overwhelmingly favor Republicans. Gallup recently found that 51 percent of men support Republicans versus 40 percent of women; Democrats hold an edge on the other side, with 49 percent of women backing them compared to 43 percent of men. The GOP’s focus on budget issues this year seems to be making a difference. “Fiscal conservatism appeals primarily and principally to men,” said poll expert (and contributor to The Daily Beast) Doug Schoen. In order to stave off huge losses in November, analysts say, Democrats need to win over males—or ramp up enthusiasm among women.
