Clementi’s Parents Comment on Suicide

A day after Tyler Clementi’s body was found in the Hudson River, his parents have commented on his apparent suicide, which took place after his college roommate at Rutgers broadcast on webcam Clementi’s sexual encounter with another man. "The outpouring of emotion and support from our friends, community and family —and from people around the country —has been humbling and deeply moving,” they said. “We understand that our family's personal tragedy presents important legal issues for the country as well as us. Regardless of legal outcomes, our hope is that our family's personal tragedy will serve as a call for compassion, empathy, and human dignity." They said Clementi’s funeral will be private and asked that their privacy be respected.
