The Nobel Prize in physics was awarded Tuesday to two Russian scientists for their experiments in graphene—the thinnest and strongest substance known to man. As thick as a single atom and 100 times stronger than steel, graphene is a sheet of carbon atoms joined together like chicken wire. Scientists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov obtained flakes of graphene by pulling Scotch tape off of graphite. Scientists hope the material will be used to build faster computer chips, lighter airplanes, and transparent touch and television screens.
