This probably isn't what Prime Minister Berlusconi had in mind. Italy's government handed mayors extra powers to fight crime and anti-social behavior, and one seaside town is using that power to ban miniskirts and low-cut jeans. If the ban goes into effect, the city will be able to fine violators between $35 and $696. Mayor Luigi Bobbio, of the center-right People of Freedom party in Castellammare di Stabia, said the regulations would help "restore urban decorum and facilitate better civil co-existence." At the Castellammare city council meeting on Monday, the town will also vote on banning sunbathing, playing soccer in public spaces, and blasphemy. Other towns have banned sandcastles, kissing in cars, feeding stray cats, and wooden clogs.
