A 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook the western islands of Indonesia Monday causing a massive tsunami that wiped away hundreds of homes, killed at least 23 people, and left 167 people missing. The remote islands of Pagai and Silabu were hit the hardest, but health officials in Indonesia say they are also evacuating the residents living near Mount Merapi, an active volcano. Pressure building beneath the mountain from the latest seismic activity “could trigger one of the most powerful blasts in years,” scientists said. One health official reports 200 body bags are being brought into the western islands as a precautionary measure.
