A suicide bomber attacked a mosque in northwest Pakistan during prayers, collapsing the roof and killing 67 people. A tribal elder who has been encouraging people to oppose the Taliban has a guest room next to the mosque and may have been the target. Hours later, a grenade attack killed three more people at another mosque linked with anti-Taliban militia. The bombings were the latest in a series of attacks on mosques and shrines in Pakistan—in October, a bomb killed three people and wounded 22 at a Sunni mosque near Peshawar. Pakistan is currently fighting Taliban and associated militants in the northwest, though they have yet to mount an offensive in North Waziristan, where the most dangerous groups fighting the U.S. in Afghanistan are based.
