Scientists have found a small area of dead corals covered in unknown brown material on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, seven miles from the BP well that spewed millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf this summer. The brown substance hasn’t been identified yet, but Charles Fisher, chief scientist on the government-sponsored research expedition, says it is likely the result of the BP spill. “The circumstantial evidence is extremely strong and compelling, because we have never seen anything like this,” Fischer said. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the researchers didn’t find similar damage at most of the sites they looked at.
