For just the second time ever, federal authorities have approved a test of stem cells that will use human subjects. The study, to be carried out by Advanced Cell Technology, will focus on Stargardt disease, which attacks a patient’s vision and often leads to blindness. Twelve people will participate in the study. Previously, stem cells had been approved in a human study on spinal-cord injuries.
