Now that your Thanksgiving food hangover has subsided, here’s some decidedly unappetizing news: Whole Foods has joined in on a massive cheese recall. Yes, the food magnate has recalled seven types of cheddar cheese over the risk of listeria or E. coli, including Sage Cheddar, Silver Mountain Cheddar, Chipotle Cheddar, Premium Block Cheddar, Premium White Chunk Cheddar, Chipotle Chunk Cheddar, and White Black Wax Cheddar. The cheeses were sold in Whole Foods stores in California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and Arizona, and are part of a factorywide recall announced by its manufacturer, Bravo Farms, after officials found listeria in its California plant. Prior to the cheddar cheese finding, Bravo Farms was forced to recall shipments of Dutch Style Gouda due to an outbreak of E. coli, and DPI Specialty Foods had to recall its Mauri Gorgonzola. Since mid-October, 38 people have been found sick due to the gouda E. coli outbreak, including 15 hospitalizations, and one case of kidney failure. The bacteria can, in some cases, be fatal.
