Federal agents arrested a California man after he threatened to kill a Washington representative over his stance on the debate last month to extend Bush-era tax cuts. Charles Turner Habermann made a pair of late-night phone calls to the office of Rep. James McDermott, a Seattle Democrat. In one message, Habermann said, “Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, or George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, if any of them had ever met Jim McDermott, they would all blow his brains out. They’d shoot him in the head." Habermann was arrested four days after the shooting that targeted Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Habermann told police that he had been drinking prior to making the phone calls.
