Jared Loughner's dark road to the Tucson Safeway continues to unfold: He checked into a nearby Motel 6 around 12:30 a.m. the morning of the shooting, and thoroughly startled motel staff while completing his final errands before the rampage. From the hotel, he drove to Walgreens to retrieve the photos he'd had developed of himself holding a gun and wearing a red G-string. Later he posted a note on his MySpace profile entitled "Goodbye, Friends," and checked out around 4 a.m. Hotel staff said he seemed "very messed up" and that "Nothing was right with him." The clerk told investigators Loughner "gave off an aura that frightened me." Soon after checking out, Loughner drove two miles to a Wal-Mart Supercenter to buy ammunition.
