This might be too confusing to raise tensions: Iran said that the two pilotless spy planes it shot down recently belonged to the U.S., but the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet said that it had no reports of aircraft downed recently. Now Iran says that the spy planes were shot down outside Iran’s airspace, but did not say why they shot them down. Originally, the country said the planes were violating its airspace. Iran announced that they had shot down the planes, and that they were in possession of the planes’ remains earlier this month. Iranian officials have hinted that they postponed the announcement in order to avoid raising tensions with the U.S.
