After a student shot two classmates on Tuesday at Gardena High School in Los Angeles, the city's Unified School District is angry that Gardena had not been conducting daily random weapon searches—a district policy, according Superintendent John Deasy. "I can't tell you that that would have discovered this individual," Deasy said Wednesday, but he added that the LAUSD will be meeting with the school's security staff to determine why the policy was not being enforced. Students at Gardena High are speaking out on the subject as well, saying that weapon checks were few and far between, and that school officials were more likely to screen for dress-code violations.
