Watch out, Natalie Portman: A University of Toronto study released Monday concludes that the fabled “ Oscar Curse”—that Best Actress winners are doomed to get divorced—is indeed real. Between 1936 and 2010, the researchers say, a whopping 60 percent of married Best Actress nominees ended up getting divorced. Winners had it worse, though—they were 1.68 times as likely to get divorced than their merely nominated peers. The study also showed there was no significant divorce risk for Best Actor winners or nominees. Analysts cited a “sudden status change” as being part of the problem in the Best Actress winners’ marriages—meaning the women suddenly leap to being more successful than their husbands.
