The U.S. is not the only region of North America in the throes of an unrelenting winter: The northern Mexico state of Chihuahua is experiencing the coldest weather in sixty years, and 35 zoo animals have frozen to death as a result. Temperatures dropping to nine degrees caused power outages across the region, cutting off heat on Saturday at the Serengeti Zoo in the town of Aldama. Parrots, serpents, iguanas, crocodiles, and a capuchin monkey all died during the outage, according to zoo owner Alberto Hernandez. Power outages across the region have forced factories, businesses, and schools to close and sent dozens of people to shelters.
