Despite gaining concessions that would have seemed revolutionary two weeks ago, Egypt’s protesters have vowed to keep intensifying their pressure against President Mubarak until he completely steps down. Mubarak’s government instead has granted concessions such as negotiating with opposition leaders—including the Muslim Brotherhood, which had been previously outlawed, and former U.N. weapons inspector Mohamed ElBaradei. The meetings, led by Vice President Omar Suleiman, led to the promise of concessions such as establishing freedom of the press and the abolishment of the country’s emergency laws. However, the protests have no end in sight after 13 days—young organizers said their demonstrations would only ramp up until Mubarak is out and the constitution is completely rewritten.
