Cries of joy and freedom from Egypt's people erupted around the country when President Hosni Mubarak surrendered his presidency to the military Friday, ending an 18-day democratic revolution and three decades of political stasis. Protesters chanted from Tahrir Square, “The people, at last, have brought down the regime.” Egyptians seemingly felt the impact of having made world history, as President Obama compared their successful revolt to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe. While Egypt's military chiefs pledged in a statement to allow "free and honest" elections, they did not specify when those elections would be held, and it remains unclear how power will shift from the military to the people. They did, however, outline several objectives for a "peaceful transition" of power.
