Egypt's military leaders imposed martial law Sunday evening after dissolving the country’s parliament and suspending the constitution to meet the demands of pro-democracy protesters who have not relented in their pressure for a quick government transition into a democratic, civilian-run institution. The military has said it will run the country for six months, or until presidential and parliament elections can be held. In the meantime, the military said it was forming a committee to amend the constitution and set the rules for the people's initiative to endorse the amendments. The ruling military council reiterated that it would abide by all of Egypt's international treaties defined in the Mubarak era, including the peace treaty with Israel.
