The IBM computer “Watson” wrecked former Jeopardy! Champions Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings Tuesday, finishing their first match with a $30,000 lead. Watson ended up $35,734 to Rutter’s $10,400 and Jennings’ $4,800. The computer did, however, stumble over some simple geography in Final Jeopardy. The category was “U.S. Cities” and Watson’s answer to the question—“Its largest airport is named for a WWII hero. Its second largest for a WWII battle”—was Toronto. (Correct answer: Chicago.) A second round between Watson and the two men will air Wednesday.
