The federal government might have a new lease on life, as Democrats react favorably to a Republican proposal for a two-week extension of the budget. The catch? The extension comes with $4 billion in cuts and $2 billion more for every additional week it’s extended. Part of the reasons the Democrats responded with cautious optimism is that most of the cuts come from President Obama’s budget rather than the list of programs Republicans want to defund. A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said he was “encouraged” by the proposal and that it sounds like a modified version of what Democrats were talking about.”
