A moment of elation quickly turned tragic Thursday night when a Michigan high school basketball star collapsed on the court and later died after sinking a game-winning layup in overtime, propelling his team to a perfect season. Wes Leonard, 16, of Fennville High, laid the ball in with under 30 seconds left in the game, capping off a 20-0 season for Fennville, but fell to the ground after his teammates and fans rushed the court. He was taken to the local hospital and later pronounced dead; the cause of death was determined to be an enlarged heart. "He had a great grin and was always cheerful. Younger kids throughout the community looked up to him and idolized him," Fennville Superintendent Dirk Weeldreyer said, describing Leonard as “the quintessential all-American kid.”
