In Libya, it seems neither side can gain a decisive upper hand in what's looking increasingly like a potentially long-lasting civil war. Col. Gaddafi's forces broke through rebel lines in the city of Zawiya, 30 miles from Tripoli, after a prolonged assault that the rebels called a “massacre” and whose brutality prompted President Obama to issue a statement that he was “appalled by the use of force against unarmed, peaceful civilians.” Elsewhere, outside Benghazi, a rebel-controlled arms depot was blown up, flattening an area three times the size of a soccer field and killing at least 26 people. But while Gaddafi's forces made inroads in Zawiya, the rebels claimed they captured the key oil port of Ras Lanouf when residents joined with them in the fighting.
