Ohio put convicted murderer Johnnie Baston to death Thursday morning at a state prison. Baston was sentenced to death in 1994 for killing a South Korean immigrant storekeeper in Toledo. The execution marks the first time a state has killed an inmate using only a single drug, pentobarbital. Most states use either sodium thiopental or a combination of drugs, but they’ve recently struggled to acquire sodium thiopental. The hours before Baston’s death saw a flurry of activity, as prison officials said Baston had confessed to the murder—he’d earlier said he was present but didn’t kill Chong-Hoon Mah—and Baston’s brother told reporters the claim was untrue.
