So who exactly are we helping in Libya, anyway? NATO Commander Admiral James Stavridis said Tuesday that while there is a “more than reasonable” chance that Col. Muammar Gaddafi will step down, there are “flickers” of al Qaeda in the Libyan rebels that may replace him. Stavridis said the intelligence about the rebels shows they are mostly “responsible men and women.” Another unnamed official backed up Stavridis’ statement, and said while there are a “sprinkling” of extremists, “nobody should think the opposition is being led by al Qaeda or one of its affiliates.” Meanwhile, on the ground, Gaddafi’s forces pushed the rebels to the outskirts of Bin Jawad, an oil town near Ras Lunas, that the opposition once occupied.
