The Syrian government's crackdown on demonstrators may be even more extensive than it seemed: Dozens of residents have gone missing since Friday, many of them from the city of Homs and towns outside the capital. Syrian human-rights group Insan has tallied the names of 217 people who have disappeared since early Friday. It's the latest sign that the government's promise to lift the oppresive emergency rule, in place since 1963, was all talk. The announcement of the repeal Thursday was followed by some of the bloodiest days in the unrest so far, with 109 people killed on Friday alone. “This is not going to stop,” said Wissam Tarif, director of Insan. “There is going to be much more bloodshed. All the signals from my perspective indicate that.”
