Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday personally halted the deportation of a New Jersey gay man who is in a civil union with an American citizen. The Board of Immigration Appeals had ruled Paul Wilson Doorman should be kicked out of the country because the Defense of Marriage Act bans civil unions. Holder said he wants to review the case himself because the act itself may be unconstitutional. Gay rights advocates called this decision a step in the right direction, but warned there are many other gay rights cases involving immigration that need to be addressed.
