Since 1997, the military has spent more than $32 billion in vain on U.S. army weaponry that was never built, according to a new study. Though the study has not yet been published, it calls the Army Weapons Programs' fruitless efforts "unacceptable." Since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the military has shifted its focus from building new pricey, technologically advanced systems in favor of relying on doctoring up tried-and-true weapons and other equipment. The U.S. Defense Department is currently working to drastically alter its weapon development strategies, prompting the biggest shake-up in the defense industry since the end of the Cold War.
